The mission of the Western Kentucky University Science Alliance is to strengthen P-12 science and math education throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Objectives:


Meets the needs of P-12 math and science students and educators through experiences, training and resources
Facilitates cooperation and collaboration across Western Kentucky University’s campus for the purpose of enhancing teacher education in science and math
Promotes science and math to P-12 students, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious or sexual orientation
Promotes and supports the efforts for improved P-12 math and science education by the WKU faculty, the community college, extended campuses, and community organizations

Goals:


To excite P-12 students about all fields of science
To improve the level of P-12 science education in Kentucky
To increase P-12 science and math educator content knowledge and insight into the disciplines
To become a leader providing a multidisciplinary approach to P-12 science education in the Commonwealth
To become a focus on the WKU campus for coordination of P-12 science education outreach activities

Kentucky Science Olympiad State Tournament Finals

Science Olympiad has been recognized as a model program in the National Science Standards developed by the National Research Council. It is both a middle and high school event. The Science Olympiad consists of 23 events that encompass many different science disciplines including but not limited to: Earth-Space Science, Technology, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on, group participation. It has been the subject of numerous science journal articles, newspaper stories, television newscasts and cable programs.

The Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students (SCATS)

Sponsored by The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU, this two-week residential or nonresidential camp provides a wide range of classes for academically talented students who are completing the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade this year. Example classes include Behavior and the Nervous System; Hands-on, Minds-on Geometry; Math is Important; Pyramids, Cathedrals, and Skyscrapers; Rocket Science; and Science:From Earthworms to Roly Polies.
