The mission of the Western Kentucky University Science Alliance is to strengthen P-12 science and math education throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Objectives:


Meets the needs of P-12 math and science students and educators through experiences, training and resources
Facilitates cooperation and collaboration across Western Kentucky University’s campus for the purpose of enhancing teacher education in science and math
Promotes science and math to P-12 students, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious or sexual orientation
Promotes and supports the efforts for improved P-12 math and science education by the WKU faculty, the community college, extended campuses, and community organizations

Goals:


To excite P-12 students about all fields of science
To improve the level of P-12 science education in Kentucky
To increase P-12 science and math educator content knowledge and insight into the disciplines
To become a leader providing a multidisciplinary approach to P-12 science education in the Commonwealth
To become a focus on the WKU campus for coordination of P-12 science education outreach activities

The Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth (VAMPY)

Sponsored by The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU, this residential program provides the opportunity for students to spend three weeks studying one course in great depth. To be eligible, a student must be completing the 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th grade this year and have earned a qualifying ACT or SAT score. This summer will be the 25th summer for VAMPY. Although many courses are available, several are science and math focused: Chemistry, Genetics, Introduction to Programming in JAVA, Mathematics, Physics, and Spectra: Understanding the Universe Through the Analysis of Light. Vertical Team Summer Institute

Teams of middle and high school teachers explore ways to build capacity for academic excellence. The institute provides opportunities for teachers to bridge the gap between middle and high school curricula and prepare students for postsecondary success. This summer marks the tenth year that The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University has sponsored the institute in conjunction with the College Board. The Advanced Placement Summer Institute

This one-week institute is designed for high school teachers who are presently teaching or preparing to teach College Board Advanced Placement classes in their high schools. This will be the 25th summer for the AP Summer Institute held at Western Kentucky University. Science courses include AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics B, and Experienced AP Chemistry.
